Today we will be talking about many of the wonderful things happening for the holidays here in Providence including of course the December 18th Very Special Christmas WaterFire to support the Providence Rescue Mission. Sean Carew (executive director and founder of the mission) will be talking us behind the doors of the mission and opening our eyes and ears to the work being done at PRM.

To get things started we will be getting a special call in from Mike Ritz who will be telling us all about the caroling night you will not want to miss that will be happening in the West Broadway Neighborhood area!

It is certainly beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in RI!

Jon has working with local production company Four Frogs Productions on their 48 Hour Film Project team for several years. He also volunteers as a videographer for WaterFire Providence events and has traveled to Pennsylvania to film WaterFire Sharon.

We are also joined by WaterFire Providence’s interactive media manager Tim Blankenship to discuss its Fifth Annual WaterFire Christmas Lighting! Tim will be discussing the Buy Local RI movement, the Christmastime Arts Festival and WaterFire’s Let In The Light campaign for #GivingTuesday.

Walmart is highly committed to Veterans and their families and we will be discussing the many different ways in which they support and hire veterans and their goal of hiring 250,000 Veterans by 2020.

Our second guest is Laurie Ludovici: Rhode Island State Police Woman and Major Rhode Island Army National Guard (Ret.). Laurie served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and will be speaking about being a woman in combat in the military and the life changing impact that experience had on her.

Today on the show we will be speaking with Roderick Fraser about The Daughter of Dawn. The Daughter of Dawn is an 80-minute, feature silent film that was shot in May, June, and July of 1920 in the Wichita Mountains of southwest Oklahoma. Shortly after completion, and after only a few screenings, the film disappeared for nearly a century—without a trace. The film was rediscovered in 2005 and restored by the Oklahoma Historical Society.

Rhode Island College hosts Family of legendary Comanche Chief Quanah Parker for first screening in New England of critically acclaimed film The Daughter of Dawn and open panel discussion of native issues. Rhode Island College will be screening the movie on September 24th at 6:00 PM, the first time this movie has been shown in New England.

Also we will be talking with Claude Arnell Milhouse Founder, Executive Director <IntraCity> Geeks about their recent recognition from President Obama and the wonderful programs they have started here in RI. Including a monthly “Code Night with the Mayor”. Our Mission: To teach everyone in urban environments coding and entrepreneurship. <IntraCity> Geeks seeks to help people in urban areas become self sufficient. By doing this, we will reduce income and wealth inequality, bridge the digital divide and diversify technology. We work with people from all walks of life, however, we are recognize that the tech sector needs to have more women and people of color.

RI International Film Festival and a chat with Spogga Hash

Bronwyn’s guests will be writer/director and producer Richard Tilkin and executive producer Cindy Gruber of the film Aside From That – A Film About Everyone’s Least Favorite Topic: “How do we live, knowing we are going to die?” Is there a best practice for thinking about mortality? Aside From That will premiere August 7 at 4:45 p.m. in the RISD Museum‘s Metcalfe Auditorium. Tickets are available on the Rhode Island International Film Festival website (riiff2015.sched.org) and at the door.

Next Bronwyn is joined by actor Michael Cuomo and filmmaker Paolo Monico. Michael was a RIIFF 2011 Best Actor winner and is back at the film festival this year to be one of the speakers at the 2015 ScriptBiz workshops. Paolo’s film The Mother plays Friday Aug 7th 5:15 pm in the “The Abyss Stares Back” program. The film is dedicated to the memory of his father Sandro Monico.

Brother Hash : Spogga also will be joining us in studio to talk about his year’s at WaterFire as well as his music and art both in RI and New Orleans.

A classically trained mime Michael has been portraying the Commedia dell’Arte character Pierrot during WaterFire lightings for many years.  Bronwyn’s final guest today is Shawn Badgley from the Rhode Island Historical Society.  Shawn is their Communications & Digital Outreach Coordinator.

We have a great show today as we prepare for the upcoming full lighting on Saturday which is in celebration and honor of Brown University’s 250th anniversary!
