Today we will be speaking with Stephanie Fortunato from the city of Providence about PVDFest 2016 which kicks off this evening and goes through Sunday. The City of Providence will be bustling with musical performances, art exhibits and many fun cultural happenings.

We will also be speaking with Tina Shepard of ONE Neighborhood Builders and Pilar McCloud from A Sweet Creation Youth Organization, Chair Providence Branch Youth Work Committee and Chair NEAC Youth Work Committee about the upcoming event, on Saturday June 11th, when ONE neighborhood Builders will host its first ever Olneyville Ovie Awards – Olneyville’s Version of the Oscars! The goal of this red carpet, dress to impress event is to honor, recognize, and pay tribute to some of the businesses, organizations, residents, and community stakeholders that make Olneyville such a special place! Community Action and Engagement to Support our Youth

Our first guests Kobi Dennis and Sean Holley Esq. will be on discussing Project Night Vision and the Providence Midnight Summer Basketball League. In the spring of 2010, in collaboration with state and local law enforcement, community members and local business, Project: Night Vision was created. The mission of the program begins with providing care and services for inner-city youth ages 12yrs.-18yrs. In June of 2015, Sean was named Coordinator of Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza’s Midnight Summer Basketball League.

Our second guest is Leo A Beliveau III who will be talking about all of the different resources and projects happening at Comprehensive Community Action. In December of 1965, Cranston Community Action Program was incorporated. At that time CCAP served Cranston, Coventry, Scituate and Foster. As many of their programs grew to include cities and towns outside that catchment area, they decided to change their name. In September of 1994 they officially became Comprehensive Community Action, but still CCAP.

Today Bronwyn will be joined by Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza who will be discussing the successful first annual Providence International Arts Festival and the city’s plans for next year. Then we will be speaking with Winfield Danielson III and Joanne Cardoza from the Providence VA, they will be discussing their upcoming open house being held from  10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2015. Representatives will be on-hand to provide information about opportunities to serve Veterans, and to provide an opportunities for Veterans from Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts who have not enrolled with the VA to take a brief tour, learn about what we have to offer, and fill out an enrollment application.

Today Barnaby is joined by Lynne McCormack and Kathleen Pletcher who will be discussing their roles supporting the arts in Providence and the upcoming Providence International Arts Festival. Lynne is the director of Providence’s department of Art, Culture + Tourism. In her 16-year tenure as a city arts administrator she has moved through the ranks, from production coordinator to a trusted member of the mayor’s cabinet. Since assuming the director position in 2006, Ms. McCormack has successfully transitioned the department from an office of cultural affairs focused on public programming to a community and economic development agency. Kathleen founded FirstWorks in 2004, transforming the one-night First Night Providence festival into a year-round performing arts and educational organization. With over 25 years experience as an entrepreneur, Kathleen has founded three non-profit arts organizations and formed strategies for organizations across the US. As a presenter, she has developed projects with creative pioneers such as Yo-Yo Ma, Kronos Quartet, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, linking performances of new work with community engagement across Rhode Island.

Our first guest on the show is Deborah Gist, the RI Commissioner of Education. On September 27th WaterFire Providence will be presenting our annual Salute to Rhode Island Educators, this event is presented in coordination with the Rhode Island Department of Education. The Salute to Educators will feature the Innovation in Education: A Showcase of Success in RI, on the Washington Street Bridge, highlighting local educational institutions and programs that are producing positive outcomes for students of all levels through innovation and leadership.
